1. St. Mary's Forane Church Koratty



St. Mary's Forane Church at Koratty, is one of the largest and the most admired Pilgrimage Marian Pious Centre in India. It is located in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam – Angamaly. It is as well the largest Marian Pilgrimage Travel and Catholic tour travel destination of in Kerala. Countless miracles are attributed to Our Lady at this Shrine. It is said that there are no accurate evidence to prove the enactment of this Pilgrim Centre. However, evidences are there to prove that this church existed during the period of Sakthan Thampuran (1775-1790) reigned over the bygone Cochin Province. It is believed that the Church, which is an apotheosis of an age-old era dating back to the 14th Century, was accustomed on September 8, 1381.

The church of Koratty Muthy which had been a centre for spiritual alleviation for thousands of admirers was adapted to access the facilities. The new Church was adored on September 8th, 1987. The interiors of the church have been beautifully festooned with block actual pictures and abatement works.

The pieces of the amazing shrine of Korattymuthy, which is many centuries old, are built of ivory. There is an intresting myth about this shrine, an acclaimed sculptor was asked to accomplish the statue on the base on an agreement. But it is said that in due time the sculptor had not completed the statue before the feast and then the people who had offered the contract were very angry and wrapped the unfinished statue in a cloth and bought to the church. But a miracle took place as when they un-wrapped the statue in the church they found the complete statue.

The Holy Mass and Novena is captivated on every Saturday as per schedule. Moreover at 9.45 am there will be Adoration afore the Mass at 10.30 am and at the end of the Novena, there will be distribution of Plantein, the Special alms locally accepted as "Poovanpazham".

How to Reach


15 km north of Cochin International Airport (Nedumbassery). 5 km north of Angamaly Junction.

3 km South of Divine Retreat Centre, Muringoor. 100 meters west of NH-47 Koratty Junction.

Pilgrim hailing from South, travelling in their own vehicles, after entering Thrissur District have to travel further 1.5 km and take the road that goes left towards pulikakkadavu to reach Marian Pilgrim Centre.

Pilgrim hailing from North have to travel 3 km south of Muringoor Divine Retreat Centre and take the road that goes right before Vaigai Processors (Madura Coats) which shall lead to the Marian Pilgrim Centre. This is easier for those pilgrims who come by buses also.

The Vazhachal waterfalls

The Vazhachal waterfalls are amid actual abutting to the Athirapally falls and are allotment of the Chalakudy river stream. 2. Puthuppally Church


This church was originally a chapel dedicated to St. Mary in year 1557 AD on a hillock nearby the Vazhakulam Hindu temple. However after eight decades i.e. 1640 it was rebuilt and shifted in the name of Mar Bahanan Sahada at Elamthuruthi Kunnu, which is the present location. This church was again rebuilt after a century and a decade in honour of St. George.

Again in the year of 2003 AD it was rebuilt and consecrated. The new church now held 3 different shrines dedicated to St. George, St. Mary and St. Bahanan. When this church was being rebuilt the church of St. George was kept intact and the verandas on either side of the church were converted into chapel’s dedicatd to St. Mary and St. Bahanan.

Each chapel/church has its own main altar where people can worship them. The main altar of St. George church is dedicated to him and the side altars are in the name of St. Thomas and St. Gregorios. The chapel of St. Mary has the main altar in her dedication while those on the side are of Morth Shmooni and Mortha Yulithi. The chapel of St. Bahanan has the side altars dedicated to Kuriakose Mar Gregorious of Pampady and St.Vattasseril Geevarghese Dionysius while the main altar is in his name. 


The church is a very well frequented church by people irrespective of their religion and they believe that their prayers are always answered by St. George. The church is well visited during the normal days of the year but it is the busiest during the Feast of St. George.


The feast of St. George is made up of four major sections and they are known as Kodiyt (Flag Hoisting), Virakedeel, Vechoot and Nercha Vilampu (firewood collection and procession, mass luncheon, offerings distribution), Rasa (ceremonial procession) and Deepa Kazhacha (Light Display) Karimarunnu Prayogam (Fire works). During these days the church is the liveliest and the busiest. So if you want to see the church in its ultimate glory this is the time to visit.

3. St Mary's Church Vallarpadam Kochi


Vallarpadam Church is one of the most acclaimed holy spots in India. The acclaimed church is actuality alleged as The Church of Our Lady of Ransom. 4. Niranam Church


Niranam Church, popularly known as “Niranam Valiya Pally” or “Niranam Pally” is the oldest church of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of southwest India state Kerala. The church is located at a distance of 7 kilometers away from Thiruvalla. It is said to believe that the church was founded by the Apostle of Jesus Christ, St. Thomas in 54 AD. The church was under construction for several times and the stones used in the church clarify the reconstruction of church in the year 1259. It is one of the most popular holy pilgrimage centres of the god’s own country. Devotees from abroad make their visit to the church round the year. The church displays the architectural style of ancient temple which looks truly amazing and beautiful. The base of the stonework resembles to Hindu Temples.

The two statues of St. Mary made up of pure gold and marble are the major tourist attractions. 3. Manjinikkara Church

5.Chettikkad St.Antony's Church

Chettikkad St. Antony's Church, Ernakulam, Kerala is highly notable as a pilgrim centre not just to Indians but also for people from all over the world. Thousands of people constellate in the centre that belong to different faiths and nations in order to seek the blessings of the Holy Saint. 6.Parumala Church



The shores of the river Pampa is home to the Parumala church. This particular church is an orthodox Syrian church and was established by Joseph Mar Dionysius. The church was established on a two acre plot of land that was donated by Arikupurathu Mathen Karnavar. The church when first established was just an ordinary building known as “Azhippura” and Syriac classes were held here by Father Yakob. In the years to come this temporary church was rebuilt and consecrated by Mar Gregorios in the year 1895.

The church has undergone a lot of changes in time and at present is designed in a circular fashion. The designing of the church that stand presently was done by an architect known as Charles Correa. The circular design of the church has a diameter of 19 meters in length and is further divided into three segments. These segments within the circle are made by two 16 meter chords. The foundation of this newly designed church was placed and blessed by Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews II who belonged to the “Catholics of the East” in year of 1995 on the 19th of March.

Parumala Thirumeni
The Parumala church is not just any ordinary church but is a pilgrimage site for the Christians. The church is considered a pilgrimage site as the church holds the tomb of Saint Geevarghese Mar Gregorios who was also popularly known as Parumala Thirumeni. Saint Geevarghese Mar Gregorios died in the year of 1902 on 2nd November and his funeral also took place here on the 3rd of November 1902. A tomb was then constructed to hold his body and for people to seek blessings from.

The circular architecture and the tomb of St. Gregorios is a grand one. One can’t help but marvel at the great architecture of the place. The designing of the church is so well planned that it can house up to 2000 worshippers at one time. The church also holds mass every Sunday at 8:45 am and a huge number of devotees show up for it.

This particular church is a grand one to visit when in Kerala and is best visited on a mass day to see it in its full glory.

7. Edappally St.George Church



Built in 594 AD, the Edappally St George church is one of the oldest churches in Kerala. It is also known as St George’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church or Edapally church. It is located at a distance of 10 kms from Cochin. The history of this church is as long as fourteen centuries, even before the nation Indian was formed, or for that matter even Cochin. During that time only a small hamlet of Edapally existed which belonged to the princely kingdom of Elangalloor. People there lived a very simple and a peaceful life and most of them were Hindus. They were later converted to Christianity by St. Thomas the Apostle. He had come to India with the sole purpose of teaching the gospel. As the population of this place grew the old church became small and hence a new church was constructed in 1080 AD. The altar of the new church had the picture of Virgin Mary surrounded by sculptures, angels and vines. There is also a painting of heaven behind the altar which fills one’s heart with unlimited joy and happiness. The façade which was renovated is now being restored to the old one and the foundation stone for this was laid by none other than Pope John Paul II.

There are many nearby attractions that one can visit while visiting this church. There is a well nearby which is believed to have miraculous properties. The water from the well is considered holy and sacred and people drink this water and bathe their head and face in it. They also take the water home in bottles. Besides this, the soil from the churchyard is also considered holy. People take it from there and sprinkle it in their homes and grounds. It is believed that doing so will prevent them from snake bites. 8. Manarcad St.Mary's Cathedral Church Kottayam



Kerela a land where Christianity has sunk its roots deeper than anywhere else in India has numerous churches available at every corner. However, Manarcad Church is one that significantly shines out from the rest. Located about 10 kilometer away from a town named Kottayam in Kerela, India the giant awe created by man with its white coat paint spelling out the peacefulness that is found within it has left tourists wanting to visit more and more as times roll by. Apart from the visitors people come there to worship Virgin Mary and one could easily feel the blessing that she bestows down on them. September 1st to the 8th would be one of the most busiest times for this church as devotees comes in large number to practice the 8th day fast and celebrate the feast of Virgin Mary.

This church consists of more than 2500 families which has been spread over 12 areas in the region. This mass of devotees are led by a team which consists of a Vicar and 8 assistant Vicars. Every old building has a myth or a legend that it brings with it and so does Manarcad Church. The legend speaks of a time when a huge stone cross was to be erected and the people went to ask for help to an elephant owner who resided about 6 kilometers away from the church. The owner refused to the devotees despair they returned pondering on the fact as to how would they manage to erect the giant cross. To their amazement they found on returning that the cross has been erected and before them stood this huge elephant.

9. Malayattoor Kurisumudy and Church



Christianity in Kerala is also one of the major and third most religions practiced by the Keralean people. The origin of Christians in Kerala dates back to the early 52 AD, it is the time of arrival of St. Thomas, the twelve disciple of the Lord Jesus. St. Thomas was the first to preach Gospel in the state Kerala and turned about twelve dozens of Brahmin families into Christians. Later, Christianity in Kerala was rehabilitated by the Portuguese in 16th and 19th centuries and the main location to spread their religion were the coastal areas of the state. In today, Kerala holds numbers of churches and each of them plays a vital role in the state’s tourism. In India it is also the state that holds a record for existing peacefully together among diverse religions like Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhism, Jains and Sikhs. All these religions live as a brotherhood in here which is the main reason for being peace and adorable. Saint Thomas Sryo-Malabar Catholic Church in Malayattoor is the major pilgrimage centers of the state.

Malayattoor is a small hamlet located in the north eastern region in Eranakulam district. The village name “Malayattoor” is a blend of three words “Mala”, “Arr” and “Oore” meaning “Mountain”, “River” and “Place”. Malayattoor is a small settlement in the middle of river, mountain and land. The St. Thomas Sryo-Malabar Church is the major tourist attraction and a popular pilgrimage center in here. The church is built at an altitude of 600 meters above the sea level at the hilltop of Kurisumudy, a mountain in at Malayattoor.

Kurishumudi is amid 2 km south from Malayattoor St. Thomas Parish Church or Thazathe Palli. The Church on top of Kurishumudi was built in 1893 over the golden cross, at 1269 feet aloft sea level and can be accomplished alone on foot. The pilgrimage to Malayattoor traces back its origin to the visit of the Saint to Kerala in the AD 52 and thus it is believed that it was St. Thomas who brought Christianity to Kerala. Puthunjayar Feast

The Feast at Kurisumudy is on the first Sunday after Easter and the Octave on the following Sunday. People visit this pilgrim centre all through the year but they come in large groups during lenten season. The number of pilgrims go up during the holy week especially on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. A lot of devotees come to the shrine carrying crosses and walking hundereds of Kilometers. Some of the crosses weight more than 75 Kilograms. When the piligrims climb the mountain they chant "Ponnin Kurisu Mala Muthappo Ponmalakayattam" that has almost become a manthra of those who climb.

MARTHOMA MANDAPAM

A very elegant and attractive building with a blend of Greco-Indian architecture, it is here that the precious relics of St. Thomas are preserved. Located at the peak of the mount, the building is erected in such a way that the relic is placed twenty steps above the ground, symbolically representing the 20 years of St Thomas's missionary works in south India.

SANNIDHI

Among the structures on top of Malayattoor hill, this one has modern architectural touch, and is situated at the Northern most part of the mount. Here, the main attraction is the Piyatha sculpture moulded at the top of the chapel. The Sannidhi is the most spacious place for worship on the mount.

GOLDEN CROSS

Kurishumudi is where one can find the Golden Cross believed to have formed when St. Thomas knelt on a rock and signed a cross with his finger. He remained there praying for a long time, and ultimately a golden cross appeared on the spot.

One of the most curious sights at the mountain is the permanent footprint and the marks of knees of St. Thomas imprinted on the rock.

A well, situated near the ancient chapel at the top of the mount is believed to be the spot from where St. Thomas quenched his thirst during his time of prayer. Feeling thirsty, he struck the rock from which fresh water started flowing. Pilgrims consider the water in the well to possess divine power to heal ailments.

By Road:-
  • To reach in Malayatoor driving down on the NH47, one will have to take a diversion towards Kalady from Angamaly and drive all the way up to Kalady town which will take about 10 minutes. Then take a left towards Malayatoor. Folks driving down from Ernakulam / Cochin can drive up to Angamaly and take the same route or take the left towards Kalady after Cochin International Airport on the NH47. The latter route is shorter but the time taken will be a little long due to the small roads on will have to drive in. During the rest of the year, there are sufficient number of buses operating to Malayattoor from towns like Emakuiam, Aluva, Angamaly, Perumbavoor, and Kothamanagalam.

10. Edappally St.George Church


Built in 594 AD, the Edappally St George church is one of the oldest churches in Kerala. It is also known as St George’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church or Edapally church. It is located at a distance of 10 kms from Cochin. The history of this church is as long as fourteen centuries, even before the nation Indian was formed, or for that matter even Cochin. During that time only a small hamlet of Edapally existed which belonged to the princely kingdom of Elangalloor. People there lived a very simple and a peaceful life and most of them were Hindus. They were later converted to Christianity by St. Thomas the Apostle. He had come to India with the sole purpose of teaching the gospel. As the population of this place grew the old church became small and hence a new church was constructed in 1080 AD. The altar of the new church had the picture of Virgin Mary surrounded by sculptures, angels and vines. There is also a painting of heaven behind the altar which fills one’s heart with unlimited joy and happiness. 11. Saint Alphonsa's Tomb, Bharananganam



Bharananganam accepted as Lisieux of India after the birthplace of St. Theresa of Lisieux in France, is amid on the banks of Meenachil River, 5 km east of Pala in Kottayam district in the state of Kerala. The thousand year old St. Mary's Church actuality is one of the acclaimed crude centers of the Christians in Kerala. Also accepted as Anakkallu Palli, it is the abode captivation the bitter remains of St. Alphonsa (1910-1946).

Saint Alphonsa was bron on 19th August 1910 at Kudamaloor, a rural village abreast Kottayam in Kerala state. Sister Alphonsa, was the fourth adolescent of Joseph and Mary Muttathupadathu. Nicknamed as Annakutty, Alphonsa's mother died when she was actual adolescent and she was aloft by her affectionate aunt, Annamma Muricken of the bygone Muricken ancestors at Muttuchira and her great-uncle Rev. Fr. Joseph Muttathupadathu. As a child, little Alphonsa was aggressive by St Theresa of Lisieux and she capital to address her activity to Christ. At 13 of years of age, she austere her bottom in an ash pit to escape from a alliance proposal. Against such bent resistance, her Aunt Who brought her up with austere discipline, accustomed her to accompany a convent.

She then joined Franciscan Clarist church at Bharananganam in 1927 demography the name Alphonsa, and accustomed her postulant's blind on 2nd August 1928. Sr. Alphonsa spent 20 years of her life there. She as well accomplished one year at a School in Vakakkad. All through her life, Alphonsa suffered from bloom problems, and afterwards years of affliction and abundant adversity she died on 28th July 1946. She was active at Bharananganam in Palai diocese.

Saint Alphonsa lived a holy life and was accustomed as an angelic person during her lifetime. Even at a young age she showed a great zeal for suffering and she acclimated to adjure agilely and longed for cede and abnegation as and if possible. She believed that she have to abide all things that tests her will and action them to the Lord. It is said that in animosity of her aching diseases, she was airy to the last.

This Tomb is located in Bharananganam, Pala in Kottyam district in the state of Kerala. This tomb is situated in the St. Mary’s church here. The timing to visit this holy Chapel is Monday to Friday (6.30 am and 11 am), Saturday (8.15 am and 3 pm) and Sunday (8.15 am)
